water for life.

Today, we started a service learning project with our class. This week, we are showing them videos and letting them do research about "water problems" that are happening on our planet. We are talking about everything from water conservation, to clean water, to the oceans. At the end of the week, they get to decide what project they want to do and what cause they want to help.

It was really a cool thing to show these videos today and facilitate the discussion. These precious kids have so many cool thoughts and ideas about what is going on and how to fix it. It was really neat to see their reactions and their compassion - I'm super excited to see where the project goes.

I showed this video, about Jay-Z's trip to Africa.
I actually almost cried during it - it's so awful.
Just imagine.
And then to watch these kids in the video, then look at my classroom full of kids just like them...
just born in a different place.

"Okay, guys. Thoughts?"
I can tell that they're semi-shocked at what they just saw. I can see their faces and their brains working.
"Is this a problem?"
"...yes."
"Why?"
And so we talk. And a boy looks at me and says,
"Yeah. And their basketball. They were playing, and it landed in the sewer. And they just... rubbed it off and kept playing."
Kids' hearts are so cool.
