they call it a...

Yall, one of my kids is reading this:

"They Call it a Breakup Because It's Broken"

FIFTH GRADE YALL. In case you're wondering, this is not a 5th grade book. Here's the Amazon link.

I have several problems with this:
1. SHE'S IN FIFTH GRADE. She checked this book out from the Austin public library, and brings it to school to read during independent reading time. (Which, I might add, she does not do, because she spends her time wasting time during independent reading time so that she doesn't have to read.)

2. This book was written for like, women in their 20's/30's. It does not contain 5th grade appropriate topics or language. Like, what kind of things is she learning about by reading this?  I skimmed two pages and found three or four different "cuss" words. I'm so glad this is in my classroom... (And when I say "glad," I mean "not at all.")

3. 5th graders should not be even THINKING about relationships or breakups. I mean, seriously. You're in 5th grade.

4. It's just WRONG. For a lot of reasons. And it makes me sad, ya know? Like, quit worrying about that stuff and go read Harry Potter or Diary of a Wimpy Kid or something. Actually, go read ANYTHING but that.

They call it a breakup, I call it
A BOOK YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO READ IN THE 5TH GRADE.

do you have room on your soapbox for me? i totally agree. Of course, we had puppy love "boyfriend/girlfriend" stuff when i was 10 or 11, but I certainly wasn't reading a book about how to break up with people.

and don't even get me started on "childrens" music or "children's" television.

OY!!!!!!!!
